How do we Teach and what Resources do we use? We offer one-to-one tuition at our home just outside Tring in Hertfordshire. Lessons are 45 minutes duration, and we use either standard text books (such as Folens, Letts, Nuffield, CGP etc.) or the student's own school text book as a study basis.
'Bring a Maths/Science Problem' Our students take responsibility for coming to our tutorials with a topic they are having difficulty with. The specific problem area can then be addressed effectively - rather than covering new material as in a conventional 'lesson'.
Learning Area Our learning area is equipped with broadband internet, white board, teaching aids and other resources (especially for Olly's occasional practical science demonstrations!)
Daily Online Maths & Science Clinic In addition to a weekly tutorial, our students also have access to the Wedgwood Tutors Online Maths & Science Clinic which is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (in term time) from 8pm to 8.30pm (UK time). The Online Maths & Science Clinic enables students to ask a question and interact with us using 'Skype' from a computer - useful for those times when they have had difficulty with a homework, for example, and perhaps need a few minutes of help to point them in the right direction. (Students are welcome to 'dial in' via Skype at other times and if we are available we'll be glad to help!)
Learning Strategy During each tutorial, together with the student, we create 'flash cards', a special technique that Lee-Anne and I have developed over several years of teaching, which helps the student to retain what they have learnt. Flash cards are an essential part of our students' learning process. We find that students make the best progress when they review their flash cards a day or two after the lesson.
Equipment We therefore ask that our students equip themselves for our tutorials with: - A pack of lined index cards and a box to put them in - any good stationer on the high street should have these. - A ring binder file to store the notes we have made during our tutorials. Please bring these materials to every lesson! |
